Philosophy of Education

An Ambleside Education is based upon the pedagogical wisdom of 19th century British educator, Charlotte Mason.

Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life. By this we mean that parents and teachers should know how to make sensible use of a child’s circumstances (atmosphere), should train him in habits of good living (discipline), and should nourish his mind with ideas, the food of the intellectual life. These three we believe to be the only instruments of which we may make lawful use in bringing up children.

Ambleside’s Philosophy of Education

Knowingly or not, the educational practice of every teacher is based upon a philosophy of education. Sometimes this philosophy is explicitly recognized. More often than not, it is merely implied by the teacher’s classroom practices.

At Ambleside, we are very intentional in everything we do. We believe that the 19th century British educator, Charlotte Mason got it right. Thus, we seek to consistently apply her principles and methods. Foundational is the conviction that “Children are Born Persons”, and that “Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.”
