Do teachers always realize the paralyzing and stupefying effect that a flood of talk has upon the mind? The inspired talk of an orator no doubt wakens a response and is listened to with tense attention; but few of us claim to be inspired, and we are sometimes aware of the difficulty of holding the attention of a class. We blame ourselves, whereas the blame lies in the instrument we employ — the diluted oral lesson or lecture, in place of the living and arresting book.

Education and Training provided by Ambleside Schools International
Institute Attendees learn the philosophy and practical skills implied in Charlotte Mason’s maxim that a teacher has three legitimate instruments of education: atmosphere (relational circumstances), discipline (habits of good living), and life (the mind’s proper food). Participants experience the application of these educational tools, first as a pupil and then as a teacher, preparing them well for their own teaching based on the philosophy and practice of Charlotte Mason.
The Summer Institute begins with small group readings, narration, and discussion of Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy. Then, upon entering the Ambleside classroom, experience what it is like to be a student at an Ambleside School. Summer Institute faculty teach from the Ambleside curriculum, including lessons in science, history, mathematics, Bible, literature, grammar, phonics, composition, nature study, music appreciation, and more. Following each lesson, shared observations bring further understanding to the Ambleside Method.
The week culminates with hands-on application of the Method of the Lesson as lessons are planned and taught by attendees. Summer Institute faculty provide curricula, assistance, and supportive critiques throughout the planning and teaching of these lessons.
What Summer Institute Participants Have Said
“This week-long intensive training on the philosophy and principles of Charlotte Mason not only shaped how I would teach and lead but also transformed the way I live, the things I value, and how I support my growing family.” Read the full blog.
“I entered the Summer Institute wondering if it would be like the other seminars I was used to in my former school system, but what I walked away with was a toolbox for the teaching profession. The days are full of teaching and learning about the philosophy and application of Charlotte Mason’s style of learning. What I learned during that week helps me each and every day, whether it be preparing lessons or fostering the right heart to engage with children. I believe I would truly be lost in the classroom without the eye-opening experience of the Summer Institute!”
